Dive into the captivating history behind one of the most mesmerizing and contemporary instruments: the handpan.

THE BIRTH OF THE HANDPAN: A MUSICAL REVOLUTION

The handpan is a relatively new instrument that has captured the imagination of musicians and listeners alike. The history of the handpan begins in the year 2000, when Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, founders of PANArt in Switzerland, created the first Hang. Inspired by the steelpan from Trinidad and Tobago, they decided to experiment with new shapes and sounds, giving rise to this unique instrument.

The Hang quickly gained popularity due to its hypnotic and resonant sound. Unlike other percussion instruments, the handpan offers a range of harmonic tones that create an immersive auditory experience. Its innovative design and ability to produce such diverse sounds have made it a musical revolution.

CULTURAL INFLUENCE: FROM METAL DRUMS TO THE HANDPAN

The handpan did not emerge out of nowhere; it has its roots in various metal drum traditions around the world. The steelpan from Trinidad and Tobago is perhaps the most direct influence. This instrument, made from recycled oil barrels, was developed in the 20th century and is known for its cheerful and vibrant melodies.

In addition to the steelpan, gongs and other Asian metal drums have also influenced the design and sound of the handpan. These cultural influences combine in the handpan to create an instrument that is both new and deeply rooted in global musical tradition.

THE EVOLUTION OF HANDPAN DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING

Since its creation, the handpan has undergone various evolutions in terms of design and manufacturing. In the early days, PANArt had almost exclusive control over the production of the Hang. However, as the instrument's popularity grew, other craftsmen began to create their own versions, each with unique characteristics.

Today, handpans are made in a variety of scales, sizes, and materials. Advances in technology and the understanding of acoustics have allowed manufacturers to continuously innovate and improve the instrument. Despite these changes, the essence of the handpan as a medium for musical expression and the creation of sonic atmospheres remains the same.
